About Schill Wooden Toys:
Six generations of wood tradition in Vienna
The roots – carpentry since 1947
The company Anton Schill was founded in its current form 1947founded as a carpentry shop by the namesake. He was following a long family tradition that produces at least one person in each generation who professionally deals with the versatile topic of wood. Whether as a carpenter, sawmill owner, wheelwright or carpenter – almost every profession has already been practiced by a family member.
Anton Schill, like his father Franz who fell in 1918, learned the carpentry trade and opened his workshop after World War II in the premises of his master craftsman, where at times over 30 employees worked.
Business expansion 1961 – the start with wooden toys
In the early 1950s, the opportunity arose to move to the current location, where 1961additionally the business with wooden goods (of) almost all kinds was opened. From the beginning, Wooden toys and crafting/working with children is a big topic – to enable children from an early age to handle and demonstrate the advantages of one of the most natural and versatile materials ever.
While Anton Schill continued to mainly run the carpentry shop – with clients such as the Federal Monuments Authority, the Vienna Castle Administration, the Lower Austrian Provincial Government, the City of Vienna, as well as renowned insurance companies and property management companies – his wife and his two daughters formed the soul of the wood products business.
Continuation by Anneliese Schill (1976)
After graduating from the HTL Mödling (then Federal Vocational School) for Sawmill, Timber Construction & Carpentry – as one of only three female graduates in the early 1960s – the younger daughter Anneliese Schill also actively worked in the carpentry shop and took over 1976eventually the now registered "Firma Anton Schill" from her father when he retired.
In the mid-90s, the carpentry business was scaled back to small custom orders and cuts, and the focus shifted to the wood trade – with a carefully selected assortment of wooden toys, presented in its own display.
The third generation – Friedrich Hala takes over (2007)
2007the founder's grandson, the current owner Friedrich Hala, took over the company and expanded it 2009for a wholesale. This should create synergies in order to be able to secure and expand the usual attractive range of traditional and new products at better conditions.
Thus, the company, which had by then almost become a brand – known and appreciated by customers beyond the borders of Vienna for generations – should be able to endure for further generations.
The next step – the webshop (2026)
In this endeavor to maintain tradition and yet stay up-to-date, now follows 2026the next step: the opening of the webshop for Wooden toys – led by Friedrich Hala, the sixth generation of the family to deal with wood.
